Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees
The Yankees are off to a dominant 8-1 start to the season, and while they have to face Zack Wheeler, I think the shortened seven inning format for the first game of this doubleheader only helps New York. J.A. Happ realistically needs to go four good innings here and then had it off to this dominant bullpen. It’s been tough for the Phillies to get into any kind of groove with all the canceled games so far.
Pick: Yankees
Miami Marlins vs. Baltimore Orioles
The Marlins shockingly got the win in their first game back after a long layoff due to all the positive COVID-19 tests. Eventually, the layoff and lack of bodies is going to catch up to them. Baltimore has been much better than anyone expected at 5-4, and Alex Cobb has been a big reason why. He has a 2.89 ERA through two starts, and the O’s beat the Red Sox by five and Rays by three in his two starts.
Pick: Orioles
New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals
I want to say be contrarian and pick against the biggest favorite on the board, especially in a big pool like this. However, we just can’t back Rick Porcello here. He’s allowed 11 runs in six innings this season, and the Mets have lost both of his starts, giving up a combined 25 runs.
Pick: Nationals
Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Martin Perez had a solid second start against the Mets, but I think he’s much closer to the pitcher that gone blown off the mound by the Orioles in his season debut. If you’ve followed any of my MLB content this season, you know I’m in full fade mode when it comes to the Red Sox. Tampa isn’t off to quite as good a start as we expected, but Ryan Yarbrough has just a 1.54 ERA through two starts, and the Rays have a clear bullpen advantage.
Pick: Rays
Houston Astros vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks have been downright awful so far this season, and starting pitching has been a major part of the issue. Robbie Ray is 0-2 with an 8.64 ERA so far and now faces the top offense in baseball. Despite the swirling scandal, the Astros are hitting just fine, averaging an MLB-best six runs per game, and it improves to 6.75 per game on the road.
Pick: Astros
