The DraftKings NHL slate starts at 8 p.m. E.T. on Wednesday night, with Game 3s for the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins, and the Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars. Two of the teams playing today are dealing with impactful injuries, and there are implications for both roster construction, and also the overall results of these games and series to deal with.
Tampa Bay Lightning
Steven Stamkos ($6,000) continues to be out of the lineup and Ryan McDonagh ($3,100) missed last night’s game, but the Lightning were able to overcome adversity and beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 in overtime, evening up the series at 1-1. Both players are expected to be out for tonight’s Game 3 as well, so it’ll once again be a tough test for the Lightning against the Bruins while missing two of their most important players.
The Lightning have made virtually zero switches to their top-end offensive line combinations throughout the playoffs, so even without Stamkos they have become probably the most predictable team to stack in NHL DFS. They also have stuck with Mikhail Sergachev ($3,700) on the point of the first power play over Victor Hedman ($5,500), and there’s no indication they’ll make a change there either. The one relevant roster note in terms of changes is that with McDonagh out, the Lightning dressed seven defensemen and split up the minutes fairly evenly, while notably playing only 11 forwards. As a result, several of Tampa Bay’s forwards saw increases in their ice time and if this continues in Game 3, it’ll give them all a better shot at accruing fantasy points.
The Avalanche dropped Game 2 against the Dallas Stars and now trail 2-0 in their second round series, and they’ll be looking to get on the board with a win in tonight’s Game 3. There’s actually no indication that the Avs will mix up their lines for the upcoming game, but it’s simply worth noting that teams down multiple games in a series have tended to get creative in this year’s playoffs, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see some changes for that reason alone.
The one thing we do know is that the Avalanche have two players who remain out, defenseman Erik Johnson ($4,100) and goaltender Philip Grubauer ($7,600). Pavel Francouz ($7,800) will be in net, and Colorado will have to continue to rely on some lower tier defensemen to pick up the slack for Johnson. He’s a key defender for this team, and losing him should continue to provide a boost to the scoring chances for the Dallas Stars.
