The NBA recently decided that this year’s MVP award, along with all the other annual performance awards, will only take into consideration the portion of the season prior to the hiatus (October to March). With that being said, we’re really only looking at a two-man race here between Giannis and LeBron. Below I’m going to make my case for each of them. Place your bets here. Giannis Antetokounmpo (-5000)
Giannis is the clear-cut favorite for a reason. The reigning MVP continued his domination in the 2019-20 season, finishing in the top-3 in the NBA in both points and rebounds, as well as owning the league’s highest player efficiency rating. Not to mention, he’s also the favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year. Oh yeah — his Milwaukee Bucks also own the NBA’s best record at 53-12. Historically, the MVP award typically goes to one of two types of players — the best player on the best team (that’s Giannis) or the league’s best stat-sheet-stuffer (also Giannis). Giannis has checked off every single box needed in order to win an MVP, which is why he’s such a heavy favorite to repeat.
LeBron James (+1000)
I gave Giannis a lot of praise. As a betting man, however, I’m actually taking LeBron. Giannis’s -5000 odds basically don’t even make it worth betting on him. Meanwhile, +1000 is a great price to take LeBron, especially considering he’s the only other name being mentioned seriously in MVP talks. You can argue The King deserves that MVP trophy every bit as much as the Greek Freak does. The fact that LeBron is putting up 25.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 10.6 assists (No. 1 in the league) in his 17th season while leading the Lakers to the No. 1 spot in the West is worthy of recognition. We’ve never seen someone perform at this elite of a level this late into a career in any sport. While some of LeBron’s stats may not be up to par with Giannis, I think he has earned enough respect amongst the league this year to be worthy of enough MVP votes to make it interesting.
