Round 4 Recap — Sunday

Viktor Hovland wins the Mayakoba Golf Classic

With a birdie on the final hole of the Mayakoba Golf Classic, Hovland ($9,700; 143 DKFP) claimed his second career PGA Tour victory. He fired a six-under with seven birdies and a bogey on Sunday to finish the weekend with a red-hot 63-65. He edged Aaron Wise ($7,400; 133 DKFP) by one stroke while Tom Hoge ($6,800; 113.5 DKFP) and Adam Long ($7,800; 112 DKFP) were both nice value plays in third place. Emiliano Grillo ($8,300; 100.5 DKFP), who led after each of the previous two rounds, sunk to a T8 finish with a one-over round on Sunday. — Zach Thompson

Aaron Wise, Harris English ride rounds of 63 to top-five finishes

Wise ($7,400; 133 DKFP) and English ($10,100; 104.5 DKFP) were absolutely rolling in Sunday’s final round at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, carding rounds of eight-under en route to top-five finishes. At 2.8% ownership in the $100K Resurgence contest, Wise was a contrarian option this week and rewarded owners with the bonus for shooting under 70 in all four rounds to finish all alone in second at -19. He was on fire Sunday, carding three birdies and an eagle on the front nine, three straight birdies on the back nine and going without a bogey. English, who was more popular at 17.3%, started the day in 20th but snuck into a tie for fifth with seven birdies, an eagle and a bogey — Kenny Ducey

Round 3 Recap — Saturday

Emiliano Grillo holds third-round lead at Mayakoba Golf Classic

Saturday wasn’t the best day for Grillo ($8,300; 110 DKFP), as he fired a three-under round that included five birdies and two bogeys. It was still enough to keep him in the lead, though, since he entered the day with a four-shot advantage. That lead shrunk to just one shot over Tom Hoge ($6,800; 92 DKFP), who remained in second place and a hard-charging Viktor Hovland ($9,700; 99.5), who fired an eight-under to move into third. There’s also a star-studded chase pack at T5 with Tony Finau ($10,700; 85.5 DKFP) and Justin Thomas ($11,400; 90.5 DKFP), who will start the final round with four shots to make up on Grillo, who is looking for his second career PGA win. — Zach Thompson

Justin Thomas vaults into contention with scorching Saturday

Thomas ($11,400; 90.5 DKFP) was the highest-rated and most-expensive option in the field for this week’s Mayakoba Golf Classic, but he wasn’t near the top of the leaderboard coming into the weekend. He changed that in a hurry with a bogey-free third round that featured nine birdies, including one three-hole streak for the added bonus. He finished the day T5 at -12 for the tournament, but he’s definitely within striking distance of the leaders if he has another great round on Sunday. Viktor Hovland (9,700; 97.5 DKFP) also had a great day shooting an eight-under to surge into third place and Adam Long ($7,800; 86.5 DKFP) matched that eight-under to move into solo fourth. — Zach Thompson

Round 2 Recap — Friday

Emiliano Grillo leads after second day of Mayakoba Golf Classic

Friday’s second round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic was suspended due to darkness, but Grillo ($8,300) will find himself at the top of the leaderboard come Saturday. He was able to card an eight-under-par 63, which pushed his score for the tournament to 13-under-par. He finished with nine birdies compared to just one bogey, which was more than enough to give him the lowest round of the day. Tom Hoge ($6,800) and Tony Finau ($10,700) are both tied for second, but they are well back of Grillo at just nine-under-par. Grillo was relatively popular in DFS this week — his average ownership of 14.55% was the 10th-highest mark in the field — and he’s moved to a +225 favorite to win the tournament on DraftKings Sportsbook. — Matt LaMarca

Russell Henley, Denny McCarthy headline projected missed cuts at Mayakoba Classic

The second round of the Mayakoba Classic is not yet in the books after play was suspended on Friday night due to darkness. That said, the cut is expected to be at one-under-par at the conclusion of the second round, which would result in a few big names going home for the weekend. Henley ($9,300) and McCarthy ($7,400) were both popular picks this week, but both players are all but guaranteed to finish below the cut line. Henley was owned across an average of 21.86% of DraftKings lineups, while McCarthy wasn’t far behind at 18.95%. That makes them two of the four highest-owned golfers on the slate. Rickie Fowler ($9,500) and Brooks Koepka ($11,000) are other notable names who will likely fail to qualify for the weekend. — Matt LaMarca

Russell Knox sits atop Mayakoba Golf Classic after first-round 65

Knox ($7,700; 58.5 DKFP), who went off at 8.5% ownership in the $500K Resurgence contest, sits atop the leaderboard in Playa del Carmen, Mexico after one round. He leads a group of Joaquin Niemann ($9,100; 48.5 DKFP), Emiliano Grillo ($8,300; 47.5 DKFP) and Tom Hoge ($6,800; 46.0 DKFP) by one stroke at 6-under. After two birdies and a bogey on the front nine, the 35-year-old went off on the back, pouring in five birdies in six holes to earn the birdie streak bonus to card a 65. He’s seeking his first top 10 finish since the Safeway Open and just his second since June 2019. He’s currently the co-favorite with Tony Finau ($10,700; 36.0 DKFP) to win the tournament at +900 on the DK Sportsbook. — Kenny Ducey

Justin Thomas struggles in first round as the favorite at the Mayakoba Golf Classic

Thomas ($11,400; 13.0 DKFP) closed as a significant favorite as far as golf tournaments go. He was +650 to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic at DraftKings Sportsbook on Thursday, leading to Thomas being a very popular DFS play. To say the least, he let down his backers in a big way in his first round. Thomas shot 1-over par, making it unsure if he will make the cut and play into the weekend. This has dropped his odds to win the tournament to +2500 as he sits seven shots off the lead. — Greg Ehrenberg
