Sherwood Country Club will be the site of this year’s ZOZO Championship, located in Thousand Oaks, California. Set at the base of the Santa Monica mountains, the course will play as a par 72 and measure just under 7,100 yards.
Sherwood Country Club has hosted PGA TOUR events in the past, mainly the Hero World Challenge from 2000 to 2013, but nothing since then. Jack Nicklaus built this course in 1989 and renovated it back in 2016. A unique course detail this week will be five par 5s and five par 3s.
Tiger Woods is a five-time winner, has five runner-ups at Sherwood Country Club and is the only past winner of the ZOZO Championship, winning in Japan last season at +3300. This year’s edition will host 25 of the top 30 in OWGR this week, including eight of the top 10. Of course, Tiger Woods has something to do with the field’s strength, but attracting the best in the world could also indicate how the course may play. With Augusta just around the corner, the guys are looking to fine-tune their approach, especially with their wedges. Sherwood Country Club offers a myriad of risk/reward opportunities into these fast, bentgrass greens that, if missed, force players to be creative to get up and down. The greens are average in size (7,200 square feet), so we should see a higher rate of greens hit in regulation over the PGA TOUR average. Still, we should roster golfers who have a standard to above-average ARG game if we see these pins placements become difficult to access, similar to Sunday at the Memorial Tournament last season.

Patrick Reed to win +2500
A top 3 in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club a couple of weeks ago and a 13th at the U.S. Open back in late September put Reed on the shortlist this week. The 8-time PGA TOUR winner comes into the ZOZO ranked 24th in approach but gained just under 6.5 at Winged Foot. Reed also ranks top 15 in SG: tee-to-Green over the past 12 rounds on Nicklaus tracks and hasn’t missed a cut at Memorial in his five starts. Reed has two top 10s at Muirfield Village dating back to 2016 and has had success on the west coast/Pacific with a win at The American Express in 2014 and the Tournament of Champions the following year, along with top 10s at Pebble Beach and Torrey Pines. Daniel Berger (+3000) is someone else to consider in this range. His odds were half this number not too long ago in similar fields. Berger’s struggled with his short game recently, but the ball-striking is elite, which is precisely the skill set needed here.
Adam Scott to Win +5000
Editor’e note: Adam Scott has withdrawn from the ZOZO Championship after testing positive for COVID-19.
As mentioned in the DraftKings Preview article, I like Scott’s chances even though he’s been on hiatus since the U.S. Open. I would’ve wanted to see him head back to the state he attended college (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) last week, but this may have resulted in a shorter number than what we’re getting now. Scott’s most recent win on the PGA TOUR came in California at the Genesis Invitational back in 2019, his first tournament on the PGA TOUR that season. There’s no one better in the field over the previous 24 rounds on Nicklaus courses in SG: Tee-to-Green than Scott.
Kevin Kisner Top 10 +750 | Top 20 +300
Kisner is someone we have to consider on shorter courses with his success at tournaments like the RSM Classic and the RBC Heritage. We’ve seen him succeed at THE PLAYERS, in WGCs and at the TOUR Championship, so we shouldn’t be too worried about Kisner’s ability in stronger fields. Distance is not Kisner’s forte, but accuracy, wedge-play and putting are. Over the previous three months, Kisner ranks 11th in fairways gained, fifth in putting and first in proximity from 125 to 150 yards away.
