Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow’s strikeout prop bet goes over for Game 1 of World Series vs. Dodgers on DraftKings Sportsbook

The Dodgers were one of baseball’s toughest teams to strike out in 2020, but DraftKings Sportsbook bettors who took the over on Tyler Glasnow’s strikeout prop for Game 1 were rewarded.

The Los Angeles Dodgers entered Game 1 of the World Series as one of the most disciplined offenses in baseball. The Dodgers chased just 23% of pitches located outside of the strike zone, tied for the lowest chase rate among all offenses. The Dodgers made contact on 75% of the pitches they swung at, the fifth best contact rate among offenses. Los Angeles’ combination of plate discipline with high contact made them one of the toughest teams to strike out, as they posted the third lowest strikeout rate on a per plate appearance basis.

That didn’t matter much to Tyler Glasnow, who has some of the most ridiculous, explosive pure stuff in baseball. Glasnow routinely touches triple digits with his four-seam fastball while dropping in a ferocious hammer curveball with extreme topspin that dives downward. Glasnow’s four-seam fastball occasionally features some cut—movement that takes the ball into left-handed batters and away from right-handed batters. Glasnow attributes this to a nerve problem in his hand that causes him to release the ball at a slightly tilted angle.

Glasnow’s ferocious pure stuff overcame the Dodgers’ disciplined and high-contact approach in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday, at least in terms of cashing in on DraftKings Sportsbook strikeout props. Glasnow struck out eight of the 23 batters he faced, which was over the 6.5 total strikeouts prop that DraftKings Sportsbook set before the game. The 6.5 total strikeout prop for Glasnow was set at +100.

DraftKings Sportsbook bettors who took the over on Glasnow’s strikeouts had to sweat, as Glasnow appeared to be losing steam shortly before getting his seventh strikeout, giving up a long ding dong Johnson to Cody Bellinger. However, the bet ultimately ended up cashing by the end of the fourth inning.

Glasnow’s final line was ugly for DraftKings DFS purposes. Glasnow allowed six earned runs in 4 13 innings and had poor control, walking six of the 23 batters he faced. He ended up throwing a career-high 112 pitches, and it was unusual for the Rays to push their starter like this, as they have a notoriously quick hook. Glasnow finished with 8.35 DraftKings fantasy points (DKFP) and was a bust from a fantasy perspective despite racking up a lot of strikeouts. He was owned in nearly half of lineups in DraftKings MLB Showdown contests on Tuesday night.
