Brazil beats Spain in extra time to claim Olympic soccer gold medal

Brazil remains the Olympic soccer champion. Five years removed from winning gold as the host nation at Rio 2016, Brazil repeated with a 2-1 extra time win over Spain on Saturday at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Malcom netted the game-winner in the 108th minute after a perfect pass across the midfield line. He picked up the ball as he advanced past the Spanish defender and from the short left side he perfectly placed the ball off his left foot past the goalkeeper.

Brazil had to work for this one. They had a chance to take an early 1-0 lead but Richarlison missed high on a penalty in the 38th minute. However, Matheus Cunha got Brazil on the board in the second minute of first half stoppage time. Spain equalized in the 61st minute when Mikel Oyarzabal netted one from the center of the box. Neither team could get on the board again until the game-winner in extra time.

Spain entered the Olympics as the gold medal favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook, installed at +250. Brazil followed by +300. This is Brazil’s second straight gold medal after never winning gold in a sport they have long dominated. The nation won silver in 1984 and 1988, bronze in 1996, and then bronze and silver in 2008 and 2012 before back-to-back gold medals.
