USA wrestler Gable Steveson wins gold medal as time expires

Even if you’re not an amateur wrestling fan, or at least don’t quite understand the scoring, this is a thrilling video to watch.

American 125kg wrestler Gable Steveson was facing Georgia’s Geno Petriashvili in the 125kg final on Friday and was trailing 8-5 with 24 seconds left in the match. He secured two points with eight seconds left to cut Petriashvili’s lead to 8-7. They lined up across from each other with Petriashvili doing everything he could to stay in front of Steveson. However, the American managed two last-ditch points on a takedown to secure the 9-8 win and a gold medal.

The announcers do a phenomenal job if you’re an American viewer.

Steveson has wrapped up a stellar run at the amateur level after enrolling at the University of Minnesota as the top nationally-ranked wrestler in the class of 2018. This year he claimed Big Ten and NCAA gold at 285 (129kg) and won gold at the Pan American Championships at 125kg. The Olympic gold is his fifth international gold dating back to 2015.
