Team USA punts instead of passes in 4x100 relay heat. They’re going home

The United States, a country where football is our most prized export, continues to pass like a wishbone team in the sprint relay on an international stage.

In yet another relay punt for Team USA in the men’s 4x100 relay, the American passed the baton like it was covered in oil, and for the first time will miss the Olympic final on time instead of being disqualified. They were the heavy favorite and expected to win gold.

If you’re unfamiliar with the fantastic work of Americans in team running, it’s a tremendous amount of failure for teams that should basically never lose due to the depth of sprinting talent in the USA.

Here’s the worst of the three passes, and it was enough to have the men finish sixth in their heat when only the top three qualify as well as the best two non-top three teams from both heats.

One of the most amazing track and field records of all time was broken by this failure. Since 1912, the United States has either won a medal or been disqualified at every Olympics or world championships ever held. That’s 40-straight international events, with 27 medals and 13 disqualifications.

This is the first time in 109 years the USA will miss an international final on time.
