There are three matches left in Tokyo in indoor volleyball, and the last four teams include two stalwarts and two sides that are new to this level of Olympic competition. The last four countries standing in the semifinals are the United States, Serbia, Brazil, and South Korea.
The USA will take on Serbia at 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday morning, which you can watch live here. At 8:00 a.m. ET a heavily-favored Brazil side will face South Korea, and that link is here.
The USA went 4-1 in pool play and got a bit of luck from an imploding ROC team to finish with the No. 1 seed in Group B. That set up a match with Group A’s No. 4 team the Dominican Republic, which they rolled easily 25-11, 25-20, 25-19 behind 21 kills from backup opposite Annie Drews and eight team blocks. Backup setter Micha Hancock was terrific in finding hitters, and the WVNT looked as solid as at any point during their Olympic campaign
Brazil won Group A with a 5-0 record, and dispatched with ROC in four sets behind Gabi’s 16 kills on 35 swings. They’ll take on a South Korea side that stunned heavily-favored Turkey in five sets, as Yeon Koung Kim shined with 26 kills, an ace and a block. It’s a fantastic story, as South Korea’s lone Olympic honor in the sport was a bronze in Montreal in 1976. But Brazil has medaled four times in the last five Olympiads, including gold twice.
