The 2021 Tokyo Olympics are coming down the home stretch, and soon medals will be handed out for men’s soccer. The semifinals are wrapping up on Tuesday, August 3 and the gold medal match will feature a pair of heavyweights.
Brazil beat Mexico in penalty kicks while Spain beat Japan 1-0 in extra time. Brazil and Spain will square off on Saturday, August 7 at 7:30 a.m. ET. Mexico and Japan will face off in the bronze medal match, which is scheduled for Friday, August 6 at 7 a.m.
Gold medal match: Brazil vs. Spain
How Brazil got here: Brazil won two group matches and drew Ivory Coast to win Group D. They beat Egypt 1-0 in the quarterfinals and then beat Mexico 4-1 in penalty kicks in the semifinals.
How Spain got here: Spain won one group match and drew Egypt and Argentina, but it was enough to win Group C. They beat Ivory Coast 5-2 in extra time in the quarterfinals and then beat Japan 1-0 in extra time in the semifinals.
Bronze medal match: Mexico vs. Japan
How Mexico got here: Mexico won two games and lost 2-1 to Japan to finish in second place in Group A. They beat South Korea 6-3 in in the quarterfinals before losing to Brazil 4-1 in penalty kicks in the semifinals.
How Japan got here: Japan won all three games in the group stage to win Group A. They beat New Zealand 4-2 in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals before losing 1-0 to Spain in extra time in the semifinals.
