There are two crucial matches for the women of USA Volleyball tonight, but a loss in either wouldn’t necessarily preclude the Americans from the gold medal either.

And the undefeated US women are back on the floor, this time against an ROC team to keep their hopes alive of the No. 1 seed in Pool B. Being the No. 1 is very helpful as the winning team will face the No. 4 team in Pool A, as No. 2 and No. 3 seeds are drawn at random for the “crossover” quarterfinal games. So yes, you might be the No. 2 seed facing the other pool’s No. 2 seed to prevent teams from tanking the the last matches of preliminary play to select a more favorable opponent.
If they USA can beat both the ROC and Italy, they’ll remove all doubt and lock up the crucial No. 1 seed.
