What are the chances the Vikings make the playoffs?

We discuss whether or not the Minnesota Vikings will make the 2024 NFL Playoffs

The Minnesota Vikings (7-9) were torched in their Week 17 matchup against the Green Packers on Sunday, getting blown out in a 33-10 rout. The quarterback carousel continued to spin as Jaren Hall was benched at halftime for Nick Mullens, who was not able to spark a miraculous comeback on New Year’s Eve.

Minnesota is still technically alive for the final Wild Card in the NFC, but those hopes are now on life support. Not only would it need to win its Week 18 matchup, it would need tons of help in the form of losses by the Packers, the Seattle Seahawks, and either the New Orleans Saints or Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Update — Because of wins by both the Bucs and Saints, the Vikings have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Upcoming Schedule

Week 18: @ Detroit Lions

Minnesota just fell to Detroit in a 30-24 loss on Christmas Eve and will have to head to Ford Field to close out the regular season. The Lions are still in play for the No. 2 seed in the NFC and that means their starters will play in this contest. That doesn’t bode well for a Vikings team that has had major issues at quarterback in the back half of the season.

Final record prediction: 7-10

Current NFC playoff standings

1. San Francisco 49ers, 12-4 — clinched NFC West
2. Dallas Cowboys, 11-5 — clinched playoff berth
3. Detroit Lions, 11-5 — clinched NFC North
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 8-8

5. Philadelphia Eagles, 11-5 — clinched playoff berth
6. Los Angeles Rams, 9-7 — clinched playoff berth
7. Green Bay Packers, 8-8

8. Seattle Seahawks, 8-8
9. New Orleans Saints, 8-8
10. Minnesota Vikings, 7-9
11. Chicago Bears, 7-9 — eliminated
12. Atlanta Falcons, 7-9
13. New York Giants, 5-11 — eliminated
14. Washington Commanders, 4-12 — eliminated
15. Arizona Cardinals, 4-12 — eliminated
16. Carolina Panthers, 2-14 — eliminated

Stick a fork in the Vikings, they’re done. Credit them for showing tons of fight after Kirk Cousins’ Achilles tear, but too many things would need to break in their favor this Sunday in order for them to sneak into the postseason. I don’t think they’ll be able to pull it off.
