What are the chances the Vikings make the playoffs?

We discuss whether or not the Minnesota Vikings will make the 2024 NFL Playoffs

The Minnesota Vikings saw their playoff hopes take a big hit in Week 16 as they lost 30-24 to the Lions. Minnesota entered with a faint shot at the NFC North, but Detroit clinched the division with a win. That leaves the Vikings fighting for a wild card berth, but on the wrong side looking in ahead of Week 16.

The Vikings are in eighth place, but sit a full game back of the Rams and Seahawks for the final two playoff berths. Minnesota leads Seattle by half a game in the conference record tiebreaker while their tiebreaker with LA would come down to common games.

Minnesota Vikings current odds

DraftKings odds: To make the playoffs — Yes +330, No -450
DVOA playoff odds: 32.3%
ESPN FPI: 19.7%
NY Times odds: 27%

Upcoming Schedule

Week 17: vs. Packers
Week 18: @ Lions

The Vikings face a tough schedule, hosting a game Packers squad and then having to travel to face a Detroit team that already beat them on Sunday in Minnesota. One thing to keep in mind is the 49ers could clinch the No. 1 seed in Week 17, which could leave the Lions with little to play for as they would be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed. Even if the Lions have nothing to play for, I think we see the Vikings split these final two games.

Final record prediction: 8-9

Current NFC playoff standings

1. San Francisco 49ers, 11-3 — clinched NFC West
2. Detroit Lions, 11-4 — clinched NFC North
3. Philadelphia Eagles, 10-4 — clinched playoff berth
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 8-7

5. Dallas Cowboys, 10-5 — clinched playoff berth
6. Los Angeles Rams, 8-7
7. Seattle Seahawks, 8-7

8. Minnesota Vikings, 7-8
9. Atlanta Falcons, 7-8
10. New Orleans Saints, 7-8
11. Green Bay Packers, 7-8
12. Chicago Bears, 6-9

The Vikings will come up short of the playoffs. They could finish 8-9 and claim a wild card berth if the Seahawks lose out, but I think Seattle splits their final two and claims one of the playoff spots. If the Rams lose out, it would potentially come down to the common games tiebreaker. I think LA beats the Giants to secure the other wild card berth.
