What are the chances Vikings make the playoffs?

We discuss whether or not the Minnesota Vikings will make the NFC playoffs.

The Vikings came into the season with hopes that their offense could lead them to the playoffs behind Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson. With injuries to both players, it’s been Brian Flores’ defense that has helped them to a 7-7 record and a tenuous playoff spot at the moment.

An overtime loss to the Bengals in Week 14 set them back, but they still have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. They are now on their fourth starting quarterback of the season, as Nick Mullens has taken over the job from Josh Dobbs, who took over for Jaren Hall, who took over for Kirk Cousins.

Minnesota Vikings current odds

DraftKings odds: To make the playoffs — Yes +115, No -145; NFC North +2000
DVOA playoff odds: 62.8%
ESPN FPI: 51.2%
NY Times odds: 56%

Upcoming Schedule

Week 16: vs. Lions
Week 17: vs. Packers
Week 18: at Lions

The Vikings won’t have it easy, as they face the NFC North leading Lions twice in their last three games. Of course, if they can win out and the Lions lose their non-Vikings game to the Cowboys, which they could, the Vikings win the division. The odds aren’t in their favor though.

More realistically, they need to win two of three games to go 9-8 on the season, which would give them a good shot of keeping their current playoff spot. A loss by the Seahawks on Monday Night Football would be helpful.

Final record prediction: 8-9

Current NFC playoff standings

1. San Francisco 49ers, 11-3 — clinched playoff berth
2. Dallas Cowboys, 10-4 — clinched playoff berth
3. Detroit Lions, 10-4
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 7-7

5. Philadelphia Eagles, 10-4 — clinched playoff berth
6. Minnesota Vikings, 7-7
7. Los Angeles Rams, 7-7

8. Seattle Seahawks, 7-7
9. New Orleans Saints, 7-7
10. Atlanta Falcons, 6-8
11. Green Bay Packers, 6-8

So much will depend on Nick Mullens not making multiple turnovers every week and right now I’m not sure he can do that. The Lions have turned things around after a lull and they should be able to beat the Vikings in both their matchups, which should eliminate them from the playoffs.
