The Green Bay Packers had a golden opportunity to boost their playoff hopes for the 2023-24 NFL season on Monday but fell to the Giants 24-22 in primetime. The Packers were lazy defensively and let Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito do whatever he wanted, and Jordan Love was too inconsistent on the other side. There were some missed plays by the young receivers and head coach Matt LaFleur made some questionable play calls, but really the defense and the Love were not good enough.
After winning three games in a row to get right back in the playoff picture, the Packers now find themselves in a spot where they likely have to win out to have a shot at the postseason. Green Bay should be getting Aaron Jones and Jaire Alexander back to help out, but Monday’s loss was a big missed opportunity. Here’s a look at Green Bay’s playoff chances.
Green Bay Packers current odds
The big benefit for Green Bay is the Rams and Seahawks also lost in Week 14, so the Packers can win out and make the playoffs without anyone else’s assistance. No game is easy, but the Packers should be able to beat the Panthers. Chicago is playing well but might rest key players to secure better draft position in Week 18. Green Bay should bounce back next week at home against Tampa, which means things likely come down to the Week 17 contest in Minnesota.
Using ESPN’s playoff predictor, the Packers would be the No. 6 seed and the Rams would be the No. 7 seed if Green Bay wins against Minnesota. If the Vikings win, I’ve projected the Packers to be the No. 7 seed with Minnesota being the No. 6 seed assuming Green Bay wins the rest of its games.
Final record prediction: 9-8, No. 7 seed
Current NFC playoff standings
It’s definitely a closer call after Monday’s loss, especially since the inconsistencies are concerning. Green Bay was rolling with wins over the Lions, Chargers and Chiefs prior to throwing up a stinker in primetime. The Packers should get back to business at home, and hopefully Jones and Alexander come back to provide a boost. The Packers are in the playoff mix, but don’t have any leeway. Will that pressure be too much? I think the Packers do get in but barely.
