What are the chances the Buccaneers make the playoffs?

We discuss whether or not the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will make the NFC playoffs.

The NFC South has been a wild ride during the 2023 NFL season, and the Buccaneers get their ride at the top coming out of Week 14. The Bucs beat the Falcons, and with the Saints beating the Panthers, the division has a three-way tie for first place. Tampa gets the tiebreaker edge thanks to the common games tiebreaker with Atlanta and the head-to-head tiebreaker with New Orleans.

All three teams sit at 6-7, which also puts them in a tie with the Packers for the final wild card berth. It seems unlikely a second team from the NFC South claims a wild card berth, but given how this season has gone, anything seems possible.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers current odds

DraftKings odds: NFC South +185
DVOA playoff odds: TBD
ESPN FPI: 42.8%
NY Times odds: 55%

Upcoming Schedule

Week 15: @ Green Bay Packers
Week 16: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Week 17: vs. New Orleans Saints
Week 18: @ Carolina Panthers

The Bucs really only need two wins the rest of the way to claim the NFC South title. If they can beat the Saints and Panthers in the final two weeks, the division is likely there’s for the taking. At the same time, the Packers and Jaguars are both beatable teams over the next two weeks. I suspect Tampa comes up short in those games, but 8-9 will be enough to claim the division crown.

Final record prediction: 8-9

Current NFC playoff standings

  1. 49ers, 10-3
  2. Cowboys, 10-3
  3. Lions, 9-4
  4. Buccaneers, 6-7
  5. Eagles, 10-3
  6. Vikings, 7-6
  7. Packers, 6-7
  8. Rams, 6-7
  9. Seahawks, 6-7
  10. Falcons, 6-7
  11. Saints, 6-7
  12. Giants, 5-8
  13. Bears, 5-8

Verdict

I’m leaning yes because I think the Falcons and Saints just can’t hold up in the division, and there aren’t enough wins to be found for a wild card berth.
