The Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers start their respective preseason schedules against each other with both teams facing situations at quarterback. The Texans are unsure if Deshaun Watson will be available to play due to pending sexual assault cases, while the Packers hope Aaron Rodgers will warm up to the idea of remaining in Green Bay after this season.
Quarterbacks
Watson is out, as expected. That leaves Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Driskel under center for Houston. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Jordan Love will start and take the majority of Green Bay’s snaps in the first game, while noting Rodgers likely won’t play at all in the preseason.
Running Backs
The Texans have a veteran running back group but all have dealt with injury issues in the past. Mark Ingram is listed as the starter on the depth chart, but expect Phillip Lindsay and Rex Burkhead to get most of the carries here. For the Packers, Aaron Jones is out. That means A.J. Dillon will get a lot of work with Kylin Hill also seeing significant carries.
Wide Receivers
Brandin Cooks, Nico Collins and Chris Conley are the players to watch for the Texans, although the former is likely to head off the field early. For the Packers, don’t expect Davante Adams to see much action. There’s an open competition between a host of players for the No. 2 and No. 3 receiver spots, meaning a lot of guys are going to see snaps here.
Tight Ends
Jordan Akins is questionable, but Pharoah Brown is listed as the starter for now. Ryan Izzo and Kahale Warring are in line for a lot of snaps in this game. For the Packers, Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan will likely get some snaps before ceding to Dominique Dafney. Josiah Deguara is listed as questionable but is one of the players to watch this preseason for Green Bay.
Other
The Texans have placed offensive tackles Tytus Howard, Roderick Johnson, and Laremy Tunsil on the COVID-19 reserve list.
