Jon Gruden likely commits tampering violation in pursuit of Richard Sherman

The Raiders appear to be in on Richard Sherman this offseason, but Jon Gruden jumps the gun in his pursuit of the 49ers CB.

Jon Gruden was recently on Chris Collinsworth’s podcast, which “features” 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman. The Las Vegas Raiders are in need of defensive help and just hired Gus Bradley as their defensive coordinator. The connection with Sherman and Bradley is obvious with Bradley’s time in Seattle. Sherman is a free agent, so the interest there was obvious and in their conversation, Gruden came out and said what they were all thinking:

Richard Sherman, if you are a free agent, which there is a rumor you are, we are looking for an alpha presence in our secondary. Somebody that could play this Hawk 3-press technique with the read step. If you’re available and interested, maybe you and I can get together at some point off air.

Sherman was amicable, saying “there’s a conversation to be had, for sure. I am free and available these days.” Unfortunately for Gruden, there’s little doubt this goes against league rules, per Pro Football Talk.

Gruden likely thought that Sherman was already a free agent, but he’s still considered under contract with the 49ers until March 17th. Of course, Gruden isn’t much for mental filters, so this tracks with his personality. In the end, we at least know the Raiders are very much interested in adding Sherman to their defense.
