The Los Angeles Rams have inked cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the largest contract a defensive back has ever received. Ramsey has signed a five year deal worth up to $105 million, according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport. The deal includes $71.2 million in total guarantees.
The deal comes less than a week after Tre’Davious White signed a then record-breaking contract extension with the Buffalo Bills. White’s deal is reportedly worth $70 million with $55 million guaranteed, and the $17.5 million per season made him the top paid per year. Prior to these two deals, Darius Slay had the top average salary at $16,683,333 per year, while Byron Jones had the highest total salary ($82.5 million) and the most fully guaranteed money ($46 million). We don’t know the fully guaranteed portion of Ramsey’s salary quite yet.
The Rams acquired Ramsey two weeks before the trade deadline last year. They traded first round picks in the 2020 and 2021 NFL Drafts and a fourth rounder in 2021. Ramsey earned his third straight Pro Bowl nod last season. He was an All Pro in 2017. He’s not one to put up huge interception totals, but he remains a lockdown corner around which you build a defense. His performance was down to a certain degree in 2019, but the extension shows LA expects a big 2020 and beyond for Ramsey.
