The Chicago Bears are sticking with their older sunk cost when Week 1 arrives in nine days. The team is going to roll out Mitchell Trubisky as their starting quarterback, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The decision comes after a camp battle that saw Matt Nagy remain mum on the starter. Trubisky competed against Nick Foles, who the Bears acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason for a fourth round pick. Foles is due $4,000,000 this year and has a cap hit of $6,666,666.

The Bears drafted Trubisky in 2017, trading up from No. 3 to No. 2 overall to acquire the QB. He appeared in 12 games as a rookie, completing 59.4 percent of his passes for 2,193 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. In 2018, he took a step forward, completing 66.6 percent of his passes for 3,223 yards, with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and earning a Pro Bowl nod. Things went south in 2019, as he completed 63.2 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Trubisky wasn’t awful in 2019, but the team was disappointed and willing to unload a high day 3 draft pick for Foles. It’s unclear just how much of an opportunity Trubisky will get and how quickly he might get benched. He’s limited from a fantasy perspective, although there is some upside with his legs. He ranked 12th among quarterbacks in fantasy points in 2018 thanks to his rushing ability. That’s a ceiling he likely won’t reach this year, so there’s no need to reach for him.
