The NFL hopes to open its 2020 season on time, but some or all of their teams can expect to be playing home games without fans in the stadium. Each locale is implementing different rules, and on Tuesday, the Seattle Seahawks announced their plans to start this year without fans in the stands.
The Seahawks won’t have fans at CenturyLink Field for their first three home games. They’ll host the New England Patriots in their home opener in Week 2 on September 20th, and are currently listed as a 3.5-point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook. Their next two home games will be against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3 and the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5, which don’t have lines yet.
In sports betting, home field advantage is viewed as being worth roughly 2.5 to 3 points. However, the Seahawks, Saints, and Chiefs all have a more significant advantage than other teams, so Seattle could be looking at near 3.5 for home field advantage.
DK Sportsbook oddsmaker Johnny Avello said he would cut home field advantage in half with no fans in the stands. There is still benefit of knowing your home stadium and locker room, and not having to travel, so you still get some boost playing at home. But, it will not be nearly what it would be if there were fans in the stands.
The Seahawks have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, but how will they play without their infamous 12th man? The Patriots line could come down to 2 points, if not a little more. Not all lines are created equal, and we know some change could happen between now and Week 2. However, if Seattle’s home field advantage is weakened significantly, the San Francisco 49ers could get a healthy boost in the NFC West.
