Final update: Johnson finished with 77 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and three receptions for 32 yards. Duke Johnson had five carries for 14 yards and no receptions on one target before leaving the game with a leg injury.
End of third quarter update: David Johnson returned a series later and appears to be good to go. Duke Johnson, however, has left with a leg injury and is questionable to return.
Third quarter update: The announcers indicated David Johnson is getting looked at on the sideline, but it’s unclear what the issue is. The Texans and Texans beat writers have not mentioned anything yet, so we’ll update as new information comes along. Johnson has eight carries for 51 yards and a touchdown, along with two receptions for 20 yards. Backup Duke Johnson has five carries for 14 yards and has been targeted once in the passing game.
First half update: David Johnson finished the first half with six rushes for 42 yards and a touchdown, and two receptions for 20 yards. Duke Johnson has a pair of carries for nine yards and this would appear to be the David Johnson show for the time being.
The Houston Texans made an offensive overhaul this past offseason, acquiring running back David Johnson in a trade that sent DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals. Johnson replaced Carlos Hyde, who departed in free agency.
Johnson had been replaced in Arizona by Kenyan Drake and there were questions about what he would bring to Houston. Through one quarter, he’s off to a strong start. Johnson has rushed three times for 33 yards and scored a touchdown on a 19-yard run. Duke Johnson is likely to serve as the primary passing down back, but David Johnson has added one reception for five yards.
