UPDATE 6:07 p.m.: NFL players and owners have both voted to approve the negotiated economic language and healthy & safety protocols for the 2020 season, per multiple reports. Training camp will begin on time.

The NFL owners and players are negotiating the details for starting training camp and the upcoming season, and appear to be nearing an agreement. The NFLPA executive committee announced it had voted unanimously to recommend the proposed changes.

There will be no preseason games this year, with teams instead ramping up from months of no activity. The season starts on September 10th, with the bulk of the league kicking off on the 13th, and the schedule offers a chance to ramp up to that. Albert Breer tweeted some details about what the schedule will probably look like.

Day 1: Testing/virtual meetings
Days 2-3: Virtual meetings
Day 4: Testing/virtual meetings
Days 5-6: Physicals
Days 7-15: Strength and conditioning (with a day off)
Day 16: Practice starts
Day 21: First padded practice

Once the first padded practice starts, there would be a maximum of 14 such practices, according to Breer. With the schedule above, Breer has the schedule as follows:

  • Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans start strength and conditioning on July 31st
  • Other 30 teams could start strength and conditioning start on August 3rd
  • Teams would open with 90 players and cut down to 80 on August 16th
  • The final roster cut day would be September 5th

Mark Maske is reporting the owners ratified a proposal to increase the practice squad to 16 players. Each team would be able to protect four players on a weekly basis from signing elsewhere.
