The NFL appears to be ramping up their offseason activity, as head coaches could return to team facilities as early as next week and players following in mid to late June, per Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports. This information isn’t set in stone, but if coaches do return next week, the timetable for players would be two or more weeks afterward, depending on Covid-19 data.
One key state to watch appears to be California. Governor Gavin Newsom has hinted that sports operations could return with “modifications and very prescriptive conditions” as early as June. California would likely be the tipping point for teams to hold minicamp and if the governor opens things up enough for teams to practice by mid-June, we will likely see minicamp start either June 15th or June 27th according to Robinson’s sources.
If minicamp were to return, it would be the biggest sign that the NFL will start on time to date. If minicamp does end up getting scrapped completely, the NFL could still start on time, but player safety will become more of a concern the more players are limited in practice time. The NFLPA will need to sign off on all of these moves, putting up another hurdle for any return to training. They have been working in conjunction with the league, so the hope is that information like this has already some initial approval from the Players Association, but we can’t know that for a fact.
