Free agent quarterback Cam Newton remains unsigned as May rapidly comes to a close. The Carolina Panthers released him earlier this year as they made the move to sign Teddy Bridgewater as their quarterback of the near future.
Newton finished the year on injured reserve due to a foot injury. He was released before his salary could become guaranteed and the team could not work out a trade. There has been speculation on his next landing spot, with the Los Angeles Chargers confirming they had looked into Newton. There has been little talk otherwise and with teams still doing virtual workouts, it’s unclear when he will sign somewhere.
On Wednesday, Newton posted video to Instagram showing him working out and looking to be in generally good shape. The video seems to focus on his foot, which has been the injury most talked about. He dealt with a shoulder injury in 2018, but by all accounts was recovered from that.
Regardless, one has to wonder what is keeping teams hesitant in signing one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL. Injuries are a concern, but when healthy, he has ridiculous upside.
DraftKings Sportsbook is offering odds on Newton’s landing spot. The Patriots top the list at +400, followed by the Steelers (+600), Washington (+700) and the Cardinals and Ravens (both +800). The Chargers were in the mix, but their decision to draft Justin Herbert has dropped them to +2500.
For now, Newton waits for a team to come to their senses and add a quarterback of tremendous value.
