The 2020 NFL Draft is a wrap, and while rosters are pretty close to settled, there is one key piece of transaction news coming up over the next week. Teams have until May 4th to decide if they want to exercise the fifth year option on first round pick contracts from the 2017 NFL Draft.
Under the terms of the previous collective bargaining agreement, exercising the option guarantees the fifth year for injury, but not for skill or cap releases. The new CBA changes that to fully guaranteed at exercise, but not until next year’s fifth year options on the 2018 draft class.
We are starting to see decisions being made on 2017 first round picks. We’ll be tracking them here as reports come in over the next week. If a player was traded since being selected, his new team gets the fifth year option.

The fifth-year option for #49ers DT Solomon Thomas would be $12.321 million for the 2021 season. That’s a non-starter, of course. But don’t rule out the possibility that both sides would want to keep the union going for at least five seasons at a price that works for both sides. https://t.co/pbGJaUbrFr
