There are plenty of strong unrestricted free agents going into the 2020 season, but as usual, there will be plenty that end up signing deals with their old team or getting the franchise tag slapped on them. This list has the top-100 free agents, but doesn’t discern between those likely to stay with their teams and those who will hit the open market.
The better a player, the more likely their team will do their best to retain them. Players like Dak Prescott, Drew Brees, Amari Cooper and Derrick Henry are likely to stay with their team, but there’s always the possibility something goes awry.
No matter their age, free agent quarterbacks are going to be high on my list as long as they have shown the slightest bit of ability. This league is predicated on the few top quarterbacks in the league and those reaching toward that top. Prescott is going to stay a Cowboy, but Ryan Tannehill came up huge with the Titans and showed enough to push him right back into the starting quarterback tier. And, if he can come close to his 2019 stats, he’ll be in the Top-15 without much of a sweat. You don’t find those kinds of quarterbacks working at the grocery store.
Tom Brady’s age keeps him from being the top quarterback on the market, but his experience and consistent ability makes him a player with plenty of suitors if he were to leave New England. His free agency bid will be the most talked about of any unrestricted free agent and rightfully so.
Byron Jones is a difference-maker in the defensive backfield and with the Cowboys needing to find ways to pay both Prescott and Amari Cooper, it looks like he will get to go to the highest bidder. There is no doubt his services will hit a high mark as teams like the Eagles and Giants look to grab him from their division rival.
Running backs have lost a lot of appeal in free agency, as other free agent backs who have been paid well recently, have done little in return. Getting young backs on rookie contracts and stacking useful UDFAs and practice squad backs is a perfectly valid plan for teams who want to allocate their money toward a quarterback and offensive line. Melvin Gordon will likely be quite disappointed with his market, especially after sitting out to start last season. Derrick Henry may be the exception to the rule though, as the Titans offense is built around his abilities. He might not get a bidding war to raise his cash numbers but the Titans should pay him well.
Jameis Winston is going to be a fun player to keep tabs on, as he can put up huge numbers in Bruce Arians’ offense, but also huge amounts of interceptions. The quarterback market looks like it will take its cue from whatever Tom Brady does. If he is truly available, he will likely go to a team with a quarterback who has some ability and will want to move on to a team where he can start. Then the dominoes will start to fall.
We will keep track of where each player in the Top-100 ends up, so bookmark this post and keep tabs on the NFL’s off-season movement.
