Report: Titans place franchise tag on Derrick Henry

The Tennessee Titans have placed the franchise tag on Derrick Henry, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This move isn’t a particular surprise, especially after the Titans announced a four-year extension with Ryan Tannehill worth $118 million with $62 million guaranteed.

It also means the Titans will need to clear an additional $12,361,000 in salary cap room, which is what Henry will make if under the one-year tender contract. In his four-year NFL career, Henry has 804 carries for 3833 yards. Last season was his best as well, with 303 carries for 1540 yards and 16 touchdowns, leading the NFL in all those categories, and then adding 83 carries for 446 yards and two touchdowns in three playoff games.

The franchise tag has to be a frustration for Henry, who is one of the dominant performers at his position in the NFL. Though it comes with fully guaranteed money, it also doesn’t have the long-term security he seeks. We’ll see if he and the Titans are able to still work out a longer deal that would help Tennessee’s salary cap and Henry’s financial future.
