Defensive end Calais Campbell has been traded from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Baltimore Ravens for a fifth-round pick, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The Ravens will quickly sign Campbell to a two year deal worth $20 million guaranteed.
Every team in the league will look at this trade with envy, as Campbell, was acquired for peanuts and is still very much a strong producer on the defensive line. Adding to that, the fifth round pick they gave up for him was one they got for a kicker who was on their roster for three weeks, Kaare Vedvik.
The Ravens were expected to go after pass rush help this offseason, as their strong 2019 defense was missing that key component, as their defensive linemen recorded four sacks all season. Campbell isn’t a spring chicken, as he will be 34 when the season begins, but he still durable and effective despite his sack numbers declining of late.
A two-year deal for Campbell after getting him for nothing is a win for the Ravens no matter how you look at it, especially with their good salary cap standing. The Jaguars on the other hand look like they’ve gone into full tank mode.
Jacksonville will save $15 million on their salary cap and Campbell had always been a possible cut candidate based on his big salary. The Jaguars have now dumped off $51 million in salary cap, which included Marcell Dareus, A.J. Bouye, and Campbell. They also will likely look to trade defensive end Yannick Ngakoue after they give him the franchise tag.
