The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions following a fourth quarter collapse by the San Francisco 49ers. Patrick Mahomes made some key plays and the 49ers could not get it done on both sides of the ball in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs deserve all the credit in the world for making it happen, while the 49ers deserve the blame they’re receiving for how their lack of finish.
The 2020 offseason is officially upon us now and the first round order of the 2020 NFL Draft is settled. The 49ers will pick No. 31 and the Chiefs will pick No. 32. The draft is meant to give bad teams a chance to infuse quality talent and that combined with a rising salary cap opens the door for maintaining some semblance of a level playing field across the league.
And yet, the Chiefs and 49ers are both in a position to build on what was a mostly successful SF season and an immensely successful KC season. New 2020 NFL mock drafts are dropping following the close of the season, and they are starting to show picks that will help shore up areas of weakness. Sporting News columnist Vinnie Iyer posted his latest mock draft Monday morning, and it does just that. Free agency will impact these mocks, but it gives us an early starting point to consider team needs.
49ers: Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama
McKinney is a multi-faceted prospect who could help solidify the back end of the 49ers defense. Jimmie Ward is a free agent, and while he had a solid season, injuries have been an issue for him. The 49ers pass rush is excellent, but their secondary is hit or miss. A safety or cornerback makes a ton of sense for this defense.
Chiefs: Neville Gallimore, DT, Oklahoma
The Chiefs defense stepped up on Sunday evening, but had issues against the run — something that has been an issue much of the season. With Chris Jones hitting free agency, KC not only would need to consider replacing him, but shoring up the line even if he stays. Gallimore is a big body 1-technique option who could help take this Chiefs defense to a new level.
