Considering the injury report as you address the Week 2 fantasy waiver wire

The fantasy football waiver wire is critical to league success. We break down key injuries from Week 1 that will impact decisions for the Week 2 waiver wire.

The first NFL Sunday is officially a wrap! We still have the Monday Night Football double-header, but in the meantime, it’s time to start considering your fantasy football waiver wire options. The Week 2 waiver wire can make or break a league, and the injury report will be critical to consider.

From a fantasy perspective, there were a few notable injuries during Week 1 Sunday, but it wasn’t too crazy. Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a collarbone injury that could cost him a few weeks, while San Francisco 49ers running back Tevin Coleman injured his ankle and is a question mark for Week 2.

Below is a rundown of notable skill position injuries, and who stands to benefit as you consider what to do with your waiver wire priority.

Tyreek Hill, WR, Chiefs

Hill suffered a shoulder injury that sent him to the hospital due to the specific spot of the injury. He is expected to miss a few weeks, but reports indicate he will not require surgery.

Sammy Watkins was on fire even before Hill got hurt, and finished with a ridiculous nine receptions for 198 yards and three touchdowns. He likely finished almost every league as the highest scoring player of Week 1. It’s safe to say he will be the Chiefs No. 1 receiver while Hill is out, and appears to be a WR1 must-start for the time being. Demarcus Robinson and MeCole Hardman made appearances, but neither has any fantasy value.

Nick Foles, QB, Jaguars

The Jaguars lost their offseason addition in the first quarter against the Chiefs. He threw a touchdown pass to D.J. Chark, but took a brutal hit on the play and broke his left collarbone. He is expected to miss two to three months. He was a low-end starter, and primarily a streaming option.

Rookie Gardner Minshew replaced Foles, and finished with 275 passing yards and two touchdowns. He is not someone to claim off waivers at this point, but is worth keeping an eye on to see if his first performance was a fluke or a sign of things to come.

Tevin Coleman, RB, 49ers

The 49ers lost Coleman midway through their Week 1 win over the Buccaneers. He suffered an ankle injury and was quickly ruled out. He was in a walking boot after the game, and is expected to get an MRI on the ankle early this week. He is questionable for Week 2.

Matt Breida replaced him in the starting lineup, but Raheem Mostert got a sizable workload as well. Breida had 15 rushes for 37 yards, while Mostert had nine rushes for 40 yards. Breida is likely to remain the starter, but he dealt with various ankle injuries in 2018. Mostert is not a great waiver pick-up, but if you have a large bench, he could be worth a flier.

Joe Mixon, RB, Bengals

Mixon had a limited performance on Sunday before leaving the game with an ankle sprain. He rushed six times for ten yards and had two receptions for seven yards. He will undergo an MRI on Monday, according to Tom Pelissero.

Mixon’s injury is believed to be minor, but he will be a name to watch on Monday. If it became a bigger concern, Gio Bernard would gain value as a waiver wire option.

Albert Wilson, WR, Dolphins

Wilson dealt with a calf injury during the preseason, and appears to have aggravated it on Sunday. He left with the injury, and his status could be in question for Week 2. That being said, even if he is able to play, he and the rest of the Dolphins hold little value in fantasy football. The Dolphins were steamrolled by the Ravens, and it’s hard to see things getting better anytime soon. Miami’s receiver corps includes DeVante Parker and Jakeem Grant, but neither is likely to have much value either.
