The Carolina Panthers did not wait for the 2019 season to end to make a major change at the top. Owner David Tepper elected to fire head coach Ron Rivera two days after the Panthers lost their fourth straight game, a Week 13 loss to Washington. Perry Fewell was named interim head coach, offensive coordinator Norv Turner was moved to special assistant to the head coach, and quarterbacks coach Scott Turner was named offensive coordinator.
The timing caught people a little off guard, but the decision did not surprise Panthers fans. There are still questions as to the future of general manager Marty Hurney, with Tepper announcing plans to hire an assistant general manager and a vice president of football operations.
The season is wrapping up, but the Panthers likely are already beginning the preliminary aspects of their head coach search. They join Washington in the market for a new head coach, and plenty more will join them when the season ends at the end of December.
There will be plenty of rumors to track, including who is interviewing when. We’ll track all the pertinent news and rumors over the coming weeks as the Panthers look for their next head coach.
