Ron Rivera interview update: Washington will meet with Rivera on Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday.

Washington wraps up its season in Week 17 vs. the Dallas Cowboys. The team had fired head coach Jay Gruden after starting the season 0-5. He was replaced by interim coach Bill Callahan, who proceeded to go 3-7 the rest of the way heading into the final week of the regular season. That isn’t much of an improvement. While Callahan will get a shot at interviewing to take over as head coach full time, it’s likely Dan Snyder and crew look elsewhere.
The top candidate on the list for Washington is reportedly former Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. He had been with the organization back in 2002 as defensive coordinator under then coach Steve Spurrier. Lewis coached Cincinnati from 2003-2018, making the playoffs seven times in his tenure with the Bengals but failing to win any of those games.
Ron Rivera is also reportedly in the running for Washington’s vacancy. He is expected to interview for the job on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Rivera was recently fired by the Carolina Panthers after another down season, though it was entirely his fault. Cam Newton hasn’t been healthy for much of the past two seasons. Rivera was forced to work with Kyle Allen at QB this season, though the Panthers’ defense was underperforming after an OK start. It’s a bit surprising the team let go of Riverboat Ron. He did lead the Panthers to Super Bowl 50, losing to the Denver Broncos. Carolina went 15-1 that season, which isn’t something you see very season.
The other name is Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who has been one of the key components of Andy Reid’s exceptional offense in Kansas City the past few seasons. Mike McCarthy’s name has also been linked to Washington, though he hasn’t sat down for an interview with the team as of yet. Urban Meyer is another big name to watch for Washington as well.
