The New England Patriots’ 2023 woes continued this week as starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain that is expected to keep him sidelined for several weeks. The Patriots take on the Steelers on Thursday Night Football in Week 14, and after that, just four weeks remain in the NFL season.
We may not see Stevenson back on the field this year, as New England won’t rush him back out there. The Patriots are not quite eliminated from playoff contention, but they sit right on the edge at 2-10.
Rhamondre Stevenson injury update
Wednesday update: Stevenson has been ruled OUT for Thursday’s matchup against the Steelers. Ezekiel Elliott is expected to start in the game and should see a large workload.
Fantasy football analysis
Fantasy managers with Stevenson on their rosters may just want to drop him entirely. But it makes sense to just throw him in an injured reserve spot in case he does return and gets carries. At best, he’ll be back for the last week or two of the season, but this Patriots offense won’t exactly be pushing for some big wins going forward. With the season a wash at this point, New England will turn to the 2024 NFL Draft to decide what the next move will be.
Ezekiel Elliott could be a good starter over the next several weeks, as he will take over the majority of the load in the backfield. Ty Montgomery and JaMycal Hasty could see some action as well, but likely not enough to make them fantasy starters as we approach the playoffs.
Opposing defenses will certainly get a fantasy boost in Stevenson’s absence. With the Pats losing their biggest offensive threat, any team facing New England in the coming weeks would be a good D/ST starter.
Stevenson’s absence may have affected the Pats’ betting trends if they were even mediocre this season, but their 2-10 record tells you everything you need to know to bet on them. They are also 2-10 against the spread this season.
If you’re looking for some good props to pick up, check out Elliott’s rushing yard lines going forward. Patriots team total rushing yards and total all-purpose yards will also be some good props to check out — expect them to come in on the very, very low side.
