The Minnesota Vikings will play a big NFC North divisional game against the Detroit Lions in Week 16. Minnesota will be sticking with Nick Mullens under center but may still be missing a piece to the offense as starting running back Alexander Mattison continues to deal with an ankle injury. If he can’t play, Ty Chandler will likely lead the backfield for the second consecutive week.
Alexander Mattison injury updates
Friday update: Mattison has been listed as questionable heading into the weekend.
Friday update: Mattison is back at practice on Friday. We will get his official practice status later this afternoon, but it is a good sign that he will head into the weekend at least listed as questionable.
Thursday update: Mattison missed practice again on Thursday. If he doesn’t practice Friday, he will likely be ruled out ahead of the weekend.
Wednesday update: Mattison didn’t practice on Wednesday, but that isn’t super surprising after missing last week’s game with an ankle injury. He has plenty of time to get back on the practice field ahead of this weekend’s game.
Fantasy football analysis
Mattison wasn’t able to take over the backfield this season. He was given a big role after the team cut Dalvin Cook in the offseason, but it hasn’t panned out. Mattison has played in 13 games this year and has tallied 660 yards on 168 carries and has yet to find the endzone on the ground. He has added 174 yards and three scores on 27 receptions.
The Lions allow the fewest fantasy points per game to opposing RBs. If Mattison is active, I wouldn’t start him in smaller than 12-team leagues, and even then would feel better if it was a 14-team league or larger. If Mattison sits, Chandler is in a similar boat. He could be started in 12-team leagues, just with a lack of competition for carries from the Vikings’ depth.
