The Tennessee Titans lost a heartbreaker to the Chargers on Sunday and look to rebound this week against the Texans. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill suffered yet another ankle injury in that game, his third of the season, but was able to play with it heavily taped.
Head coach Mike Vrabel didn’t give much detail into the injury on Monday, but he did say that Tannehill would play if he is healthy, per Jim Wyatt. Is that Vrabel saying that Tannehill is still the starter, which I don’t think anyone was questioning?
Malik Willis, who looked pretty awful in relief of Tannehill in previous games, did look a bit more poised and ready to play quarterback when Tannehill left for a few snaps against the Chargers. But, there’s no real controversy that Tannehill gives them the best chance to win if he’s healthy.
Ryan Tannehill injury updates
Friday PM update — Tannehill underwent ankle surgery and is likely out for the rest of the season, per Adam Schefter. He’s now considered “a long shot” to return to the field. It’ll be Willis at quarterback for the Titans who control their own destiny in their division.
Thursday PM update — Tannehill has officially been ruled out for Week 16. Malik Willis will start in his place this week.
Thursday update — Tannehill was once again not practicing on Thursday, per Jim Wyatt. Even if the report that he’s done for the season proves to be innacurate, it doesn’t look like he’ll be playing this weekend.
Wednesday PM update — Ryan Tannehill may require surgery to his ankle, per Paul Kuharsky. Kuharsky is a long time beat writer for the Titans, so his reports are worthy of paying attention to. The Titans would need to roll with Malik Willis to try to keep them in the playoff race to finish out the season.
Wednesday update — Tannehill was not spotted at practice on Wednesday, per Jim Wyatt. We’ll likely need to see him practicing tomorrow to have a shot to play on Saturday.
Wednesday update — NFL Network’s Tom Pellissero says that Tannehill will have an “uphill battle” to play this week. He has played through ankle injuries this season, so we can’t rule him out, but there’s a real chance we see Malik Willis this week.
Wednesday update — The Titans have signed Josh Dobbs off the Lions practice squad, per ProFootballTalk. This move doesn’t mean that Tannehill won’t play this week, but it does show the team wants to be sure they have a backup to Malik Willis if Tannehill ends up not being able to go.
Tuesday update — Tannehill didn’t practice Tuesday, so he’s not starting off the week well in terms of being ready to play. Tannehill still has a few more days to log at least a limited practice and show enough signs he can go in Week 16.
Monday update — Tannehill is dealing with an ankle injury that he was able to play through in Week 15. He will likely miss some practice time, but he should have a good chance to play through the injury against Houston.
Fantasy football advice
Tannehill hasn’t been a fantasy relevant QB this season, which has a lot to do with a lack of standout receivers. It would be helpful to get Treylon Burks back from his concussion, but his status remains up in the air.
