We break down the news that Joe Mixon has a head injury. What it means for Week 13 and beyond.

Friday PM Update: Mixon has yet to be cleared, but has been officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs. If he is inactive, backup running back Samaje Perine figures to get an uptick in work.

Friday update: Mixon remains in protocol, but will play if he is cleared in time, per Geoff Hobson. He has been getting in limited practices, so he has a decent chance to be cleared ahead of the game.

Thursday PM Update: Mixon was listed as a limited practice participant on Thursday and is still in the concussion protocol. You’d like to see him upgraded to a full participant on Friday, but even if he heads into the weekend as questionable, he could still suit up Sunday.

Wednesday update: Mixon remains in concussion protocol, but he will be able to practice on Wednesday, per Marisa Contipelli. This is a very good sign for his ability to return this week against the Chiefs, which would push Samaje Perine right back into his backup role.

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor told reporters that starting running back Joe Mixon is still in the concussion protocol, per ESPN’s Ben Baby. Taylor does say that Mixon is improving, but gave no indications either way on his status for this week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mixon missed Week 12 with a concussion, but the Bengals were able to win without him. Backup Samaje Perine had a good game in his absence, seeing 21 touches and nearly 100 total yards and a touchdown.

Fantasy football implications for Week 13

Mixon was coming off a huge game in Week 9 when he scored an amazing five touchdowns, but suffered his concussion coming off their bye in Week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Perine has played well in his stead, scoring three times in the last two games and would be a good start again if Mixon happens to miss this week.
