Report: Trae Young agrees to five-year maximum contract extension with Hawks

Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Young agreed to a five-year, $207 maximum contract extension with the Hawks, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. Young’s extension will kick in prior to him hitting restricted free agency.

The point guard exploded this season, averaging 25.3 points and 9.4 assists per game as the Hawks made the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. He elevated his game further in the playoffs, averaging 28.8 points and 9.5 assists per game as the Hawks made a run to the Eastern conference finals. Young missed two games in the conference finals due to an ankle injury, but ended up returning for Atlanta’s final game of the season.

This extension sets up the Hawks nicely going forward, but they will still need to address John Collins’ free agency. The power forward did not come to an agreement on an extension and is a restricted free agent. The Hawks can match any offer he signs, but there’s been some tension between the sides. Young is most effective when Collins is on the floor with him and Atlanta will want both players together for the foreseeable future.
