Key takeaways from Monday’s NBA Summer League games in Las Vegas

After an exciting opening day in the MGM Resorts Las Vegas Summer League on Sunday, we had nine games on tap Monday both at the Thomas & Mack Center and the Cox Pavilion.

The NBA Summer League is a great place to not only see the 2021 rookie class, but also the 2020 rookie class, which made a lot of noise this past season in the association. Below we’ll take a look at a few of the takeaways from Monday’s action that you might’ve missed.

Quickley, Maxey dominate in their respective SL games

Former University of Kentucky teammates Immanuel Quickley and Tyrese Maxey looked like established veterans for their respective teams Monday. Quickley led the way for the Knicks, scoring a game-high 32 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the field and 4-of-12 shooting from three-point range. He also dished out a game-high 8 assists in the Knicks’ 94-86 win against the Indiana Pacers.

Quickley had a solid rookie season under head coach Tom Thibodeau, but will be looking to take that next step in the 2021-22 season. As for Maxey, he was the best player on the floor as the Philadelphia 76ers crushed the Dallas Mavericks 95-73.

Maxey, along with Isaiah Joe, helped the Sixers get out to 17-point lead at the end of the first quarter and 26-point lead by half-time. The former first-round pick was aggressive on the offensive end by driving to the rim, but also knocking down perimeter shots. He finished with a team-high 21 points (8-15 FG, 3-6 3pt), and added 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

Suggs looks magical in Orlando debut

While everybody was still talking about the SL debuts of Cade Cunningham and Jalen Green from Sunday, Jalen Suggs made his mark in his summer league debut Monday night against the Golden State Warriors.

Suggs outplayed his draft classmates in Warriors’ first rounders Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga, scoring a game-high 24 points in Orlando’s 91-89 overtime win. Suggs looks like he picked up where he left off at Gonzaga and will be a part of rebuild in Orlando that has a ton of young talent.

LiAngelo Ball puts together another solid performance

The middle Ball brother is trying to make a name for himself in the NBA and is off to a solid start in the NBA Summer League. In his Summer League debut Sunday, LiAngelo Ball shot the ball well from the behind arc, going 5-for-8 en route to 16 points against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Ball followed up that performance Monday evening with 10 points (4-8 FG, 1-4 3pt) and 5 rebounds against the Sacramento Kings. Ball appears to be finding his way as a shooter, which is a good way to be invited to training camp, let alone to make a NBA roster.
