Nigeria beats Team USA 90-87. In basketball. Seriously.

So that happened, and now the heat is on the USA ahead of the Olympics in Tokyo in three weeks.

The United States men’s basketball team was stunned 90-87 by Nigeria on Saturday night in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay Arena.

The US was between a 28 and 29-point favorite at tip-off, but we had to look because this wasn’t supposed to be a thing, and honestly we were watching the Copa America Final and the UFC.

If you’re thinking “well they didn’t have their best players,” the starters were Bradley Beal, Damian Lillard, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, and Bam Adebayo.

And we’d get you some stats from this game, but...

Turns out the live stats were just as good as the three-point defense.

Here’s what we do know so far:

We’ll continue to add relevant information here as we find it, and it’s not like they didn’t have any NBA talent: The Super Eagles (does that apply for basketball??) started KZ Okpala, Gabe Vincent and Precious Achiuwa of the Heat, Josh Okogie of the Timberwolves, and former UNLV and Mercer guard Ike Nwamu.

But this seems like a disaster to be honest, though it is three weeks until the Olympics start. These players will have plenty of time to get it together and bring back the USA’s assumed birthright of a gold medal.
