Update, June 25th — The Mavericks and Kidd have reached an agreement on a contract to make him their next head coach, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported Friday. The Mavs are also bringing in Nike executive Nico Harrison as President of Basketball Operations to replace Donnie Nelson. Kidd will take over for Carlisle, who joined the Pacers on Thursday.
The Dallas Mavericks are close to hiring Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd as their head coach, according to multiple media reports. Kidd was drafted by the Mavericks and played for them from 1994-96 and 2008-12, winning the NBA title in 2011.
The Mavericks are revamping their front office and coaching staff after the departure of longtime GM Donnie Nelson and coach Rick Carlisle, who is taking over as head coach of the Indiana Pacers. Dallas hired franchise icon and fan favorite Dirk Nowitzki to a front office role and Kidd reportedly has his support.
Kidd is 183-190 in his career as a head coach with the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks. He’s been credited with aiding in Giannis Antetokounmpo’s development, although it’s unclear how much of that input resulted in Milwaukee’s current success. Kidd will be tasked with taking the Mavs to the next level with Luka Doncic as the centerpiece of the team.
