The Philadelphia Phillies are adding SP Kyle Gibson from the Texas Rangers, according to Ken Rosenthal. Gibson is one of the top pitchers in the league and was expected to be dealt as the trade deadline approached.
Gibson brings a 2.87 ERA to Philadelphia and will immediately add value to a struggling rotation. The Phillies are just 3.5 games back of the New York Mets in the NL East standings with about a third of the season left. The wild card race looks to be out of Philadelphia’s control, so the division is the best chance for the Phillies to make the playoffs. According to DraftKings Sporstbook, the Phillies are currently +2800 to win the NL.
It’s unclear what the Rangers got in return at the moment, but were always going to have suitors for Gibson. The Rangers reportedly got big-time prospect Spencer Howard in the deal, according to Jeff Passan, along with two other prospects. Gibson is under contract for one more season.
