We have a full 15-game schedule Sunday in the majors with the first game starting at 1:07 p.m. ET between the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. We are going to look at the best pitching matchup and the sleeper pitching matchup that could turn out to be a pitchers’ duel.

Best Matchup: Max Scherzer vs. Sandy Alcantara

There are not a ton of great pitching matchups Sunday afternoon in the majors, despite Zack Wheeler and Gerrit Cole on the mound for their respective teams. However, there’s one intriguing matchup that could be worth following between the Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins at 1:10 p.m. ET.

Max Scherzer will be making his 15th start for the Nationals this season. The veteran pitcher is 6-4 with an ERA of 2.19. Scherzer is coming off a good start against the Phillies, where he only allowed 2 hits (1 HR), 1 earned run, 3 walks, and had 8 strikeouts in 5.0 IP. As for Miami, Sandy Alcantara has been solid with a 4-6 record and 2.93 ERA through 16 starts. The 25-year-old pitcher is playing well at home this season with an ERA of 2.19 and 1-2 record.

Sleeper Matchup: Max Kranick vs. Johan Oviedo

We’ll have the battle of the rookie pitchers when the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals wrap up their series at 2:15 p.m. ET. The Pirates will give the ball to Max Kranick, who is the 26th best prospect in their system, according to MLBPipeline. The 23-year-old spent time in both Double-A and Triple-A this season, producing an ERA of 4.37 in seven starts.

The Cardinals will be giving the ball to Johan Oviedo, who is making his ninth start and 10th appearance this season. The 23-year-old is 0-3 with a 4.62 ERA. But he’s pitching better this month, with an ERA of 3.79 through four starts, which is an improvement from May — 7.84 ERA.
