Pitching matchups for Monday’s MLB games

We take a look at the pitching matchups for each MLB game on the slate for Monday, May 17th.

Monday marks the start of a new week around Major League Baseball, but almost half the teams in the league have a day off. So, don’t be expecting any marquee matchups on the hill today.

Still, there are some solid games that could turn into pitcher’s duels. Take a look at what we have down as our best games to watch if you’re looking at the hurlers.

Best matchup: Dallas Keuchel (CWS) vs. JA Happ (MIN)

Now, any other day this probably would not be the best matchup on the slate. But with the limited number of games happening today, something’s got to rise to the top.

Keuchel has fallen off since his Cy Young days with Houston. Still, he’s been solid this season. He’s gone deep in most games, making it to at least the sixth inning in all but one of his starts. In his last three games, he’s allowed 14 hits, but eight of them came at once. However that was against Minnesota, so we’ll see what happens today.

Happ was pulled from his last game after just 3.1 innings tossed. It just so happened to be against the White Sox as well, so he’ll have to make some adjustments for tonight’s game. Still, outside of that one tough game, he’s been solid. Before that outing, he had allowed just six runs all season through five starts.

Sleeper matchup: Sonny Gray (CIN) vs. Logan Webb (SF)

We all know what Sonny Gray is capable of on the hill. He’s been one of the better pitchers in the majors over a few instances in his career. He’s given up just 10 runs over five appearances this season and has 36 Ks, including an 11 strikeout performance two weeks ago.

Webb is a bit more of an unknown. He’s moved from a starter to the bullpen and back to the starting rotation already this season. But during his last outing, he showed how good he can be, giving up just three hits over six innings in a win over the Rangers. The Cincy offense is relentless though, so it will be fun to watch how he tries to handle them.

Here’s a look at the pitching matchups for Monday’s nine-game MLB slate on May 17th.
