Best Matchup: Nick Pivetta vs. Jacob deGrom

Happy Jacob deGrom day! This is less about the individual matchup here and more about the fact that when deGrom is at work, you need to stop and watch. The New York Mets’ ace has struck out 45 of the previous 82 batters he has faced and holds a ridiculous 0.31 ERA through 29 innings. Let’s see what the Red Sox’s offense, which leads MLB in hits and OPS, can accomplish against this irresistible force. Pivetta has been a worthwhile starter for Boston. He’s coming off a six-inning outing versus the Mariners in which he allowed only one hit.

Sleeper Matchup: Cole Irvin vs. Tyler Glasnow

Glasnow will try to get back on track against the Oakland Athletics today. The Rays’ fireballer gave up a couple of homers and five runs to the Blue Jays his last time out. Prior to that, Glasnow had surrendered a total of two earned runs and nine hits through 24.2 innings. Irvin’s expected stats show that he has been getting some good fortune recently, so regression may hit him soon. But he has walked only three batters in 21 innings this year and has permitted just one run in his last 11.1 innings.
