Pitching matchups for Tuesday’s MLB games

We take a look at the pitching matchups for each MLB game on the slate for Tuesday, April 20th.

MLB: Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Gear up for just about as full as an MLB slate can get with a total of 16 baseball games taking place from the afternoon till the early hours of the morning. The action will get started at 4:10 p.m. ET with the final game’s first pitch set to be thrown at 10:10 p.m. ET. The Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics will play a doubleheader after Monday’s series opener was postponed due to COVID-19 issues for the Twins. Below is a look at a few of the best pitching matchups on the night.

Best Matchup: Jose Berrios vs. Jesus Luzardo

In the second game of the Minnesota-Oakland doubleheader, a pair of No. 2 starters in the rotation will take the mound but if they played elsewhere, there’s a good chance both would be considered the ace on the staff. A bit of a Cy Young dark horse, Luzardo has gotten off to a rough start through three games. He is 0-1 with a 8.31 ERA and was unable to get through three innings in his last start in which he allowed five earned runs on six hits and two walks in 2.2 innings, but eventually he should get back on track. Berrios is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA through three starts highlighted by his first start in which he did not allow a hit in six innings of work with 12 strikeouts against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Sleeper Matchup: Corbin Burnes vs. Chris Paddack

If you haven’t taken a look at Brewers starter Corbin Burnes, he’s worth staying up for in their game against the San Diego Padres late on Tuesday night. Currently among the NL Cy Young favorites, Burnes has continued on last season’s success and through three starts, he is 1-1 with a 0.49 ERA. He threw a scoreless six innings in each of his last two starts and allowed one run all season long in 18.1 innings of work. For the Padres, Chris Paddack has had a few short starts, but he’s been relatively effective early on with a 1-1 record and a 4.15 ERA for the 25-year-old righthander.
