The Washington Nationals announced Sunday they’ve that SP Stephen Strasburg was placed on the 10-day injured list due to shoulder inflammation.
The righty was slated to make his third start of the season on Sunday, but was scratched due to the shoulder issue. In his most recent start, Strasburg went just four innings, throwing 88 pitches and allowing eight runs to the St. Louis Cardinals. After Strasburg was pulled from that game, he was clearly in some discomfort in his right shoulder.
Injuries aren’t anything new for Strasburg. He threw just five innings last season due to carpal tunnel in his right hand and has spent a lot of time on the IL during his MLB career for various reasons. There’s currently no timetable for his return, but he shouldn’t be out for a considerable amount of time. He’ll likely get a few days of rest before he tries to throw again. Once he gets another throwing session in, the Nats medical staff will set a time for return based on how much discomfort he’s still in.
Fantasy Impact
From a fantasy perspective, it’s not that big a deal in the short term. Sure, when he’s healthy he can be one of the best pitchers in the game, but only once every five days. It’s unlikely he misses more than two more starts because of this unless a more serious injury is discovered. But for now, just stay calm and keep him on your bench until more news comes out.
