We have a loaded 15-game MLB schedule on Wednesday, with the first game beginning at 1:07 p.m. ET between the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. We have a doubleheader on tap as the Boston Red Sox will be playing the Minnesota Twins at 2:10 p.m. ET. Game 2 is scheduled to being a few hours later at 5:10 p.m. ET.

Lastly, Joe Musgrove will be back on the mound for the Padres after throwing the first no-hitter in San Diego Padres team history last week against the Texas Rangers. Musgrove will be facing his old team in the Pittsburgh Pirates. With all that being said, we are going to look at the best pitching matchup and the sleeper pitching matchup that could turn out to be a pitcher’s duel.

Best Matchup: Jake Arrieta vs. Corbin Burnes

There are a lot good pitching matchups in MLB for Wednesday. However, the one matchup that stands out is Arrieta vs. Burnes. Both starting pitchers have looked good in their first two outings and will clash in an NL Central battle at 1:40 p.m. ET. Arrieta, who will be starting for the Chicago Cubs, has a perfect record of 2-0 and an ERA of 2.25. Both of his wins have come against the Pirates. He also has only allowed three earned, while striking out nine in 12 IP.

In 19 games against the Brew Crew, Arrieta has a record of 9-7 with an ERA of 3.30 and K/9 of 7.8. As for Burnes, he’s been a strikeout machine in his first two outings on the mound. In his last start against the St. Louis Cardinals, the 26-year-old struck out nine batters and only gave up one hit in 6.0 IP. Burnes has not been lucky like his counterpart Arrieta as he has an 0-1 record with an ERA of 0.73.

Sleeper Matchup: Tyler Mahle vs. Johnny Cueto

We are going to head out West for the sleeper matchup as Tyler Mahle of the Cincinnati Reds will be opposed by former Cincinnati Reds pitcher and now current San Francisco Giant Johnny Cueto. This game is scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. ET.

Mahle will be looking to carry his momentum over from his second start last week against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In that start, he allowed did not allow a single hit or run, but walked four and struck out six in four innings pitched. This season, he has a record of 0-1 with an ERA of 2.00. Cueto is coming off a dominating performance against the Colorado Rockies last week. He only allowed one earned run, one walk, four hits, and struck out seven in 8.2 IP. The veteran pitcher has had back-to-back seven strikeout performances to begin the season, which is a good sign for the Giants’ pitching rotation.

Here’s a look at the pitching matchups for Wednesday’s 15-game MLB slate on April 14th.
