Report: Fernando Tatis Jr., Padres negotiating 11-year, $320 million contract extension

After an outstanding 2020 season from Tatis Jr., which ended with the San Diego Padres making the playoffs. The Padres’ front office brass wants to make sure they keep the star infielder for a long time.

Over the last few seasons, the San Diego Padres have made major moves to upgrade their roster. From signing Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado in free-agency to trading for Mike Clevinger and now Blake Snell, the Padres appear ready to make a run at the N.L. West crown.

Along those same lines, San Diego might have one more blockbuster move up their sleeve this offseason. The Padres are reportedly negotiating an 11-year, $320 million contract extension with star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., per Pio Deportes.

MLB insider Jon Heyman adds that the potential extension is expected to be in the 10-year range. Additionally, Jessica Kleinschmidt of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that San Diego wants to get an extension done before Francisco Lindor receives one from the New York Mets.

This past season, Tatis was one of the best shortstops not only in the N.L. but also in Major League Baseball. The 22-year-old infielder slashed .277/.366/.571 with 17 home runs and 45 RBI. For his efforts, Tatis finished fourth in the NL MVP vote and won the Silver Slugger award at shortstop.
